This list is to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Diverse Book Project. According to UMBC, culturally-responsive books and classrooms enhance literacy gains, especially for non-White students. A Different Pond by Bao Phi is a powerful story, using nature and camping, as a way to explain identity in the context of a Vietnam War refugee family. Appropriate for ages 4-6.
Crown an Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes focuses on positive self-image and African American culture; detailing the feelings and experiences of a young boy while getting a haircut. Appropriate for ages 4-8.
Lorraine, the Girl Who Sang the Storm Away, by Ketch Secor, is a great family book (ages 4-8) and is about building confidence through music.
